Extreme flood events are becoming increasingly frequent, causing not only extensive physical damage but also the transport and redistribution of contaminated soils and sediments. The long-term health and environmental impacts of floodwater quality often receive less attention compared to immediate physical damages. Communities residing near or within contaminated floodplains are at risk of exposure to these displaced contaminants, compounding the challenges they face. FloodTox addresses this critical issue by providing technical expertise in modeling the fate and transport of contaminants during floods, supporting protection, mitigation, and resilience planning for vulnerable communities.
The External Coupler links the HEC-RAS 2D (v.6.5) and WASP (v.8.4) models to simulate the fate and transport of contaminants during flood events. Developed in Python, this tool leverages scientific and geospatial libraries to reconstruct the HEC-RAS 2D computational grid and process flow, velocity, and water depth data for input into the WASP model. The program calculates volume from simulated flow while ensuring flow-volume continuity is maintained in the WASP input. Additionally, the coupler facilitates the spatial aggregation of hydrodynamic data, accelerating the simulation and calibration of water quality constituents within the WASP model.
